Dear Colleagues,
Let me start off by saying thank you to all those who supported the biggest rally in NYC history this past Thursday. I was there representing our staff, our school, and our students. The experience was inspirational and I think we sent a message. (Read more about the rally later.)
Before accepting this position, I understood the commitment in both time and person that it entailed. I am committed to meeting the needs of our staff and our students. However, I have to do this within the confines of our contracts and agreements with the DOE. At times, that means addressing the abuses and misuses of our contracts that do not serve the best interest of the staff, and in some cases students.
As situations arise that violate the contracts and agreements, I am obligated to address them with the principal or “violator”. If it’s a matter of contract, I usually extend a reasonable time period to remedy the issue. I offer suggestions or ideas that would be acceptable. If the issue still persists, then it has to go to the next level (sometimes through a grievance or a special education complaint). You have a right to file these grievances and complaints, as well.
In doing so, some decisions are not necessarily going to make people happy. Again, I signed up for and accept that fact. It will never deter me from doing what is right for EVERYONE.
At times, I will not have an immediate or best response to a situation. In fact, I may even get it wrong or make a mistake. However, this is how I learn to become better and serves as a reminder that I am still human.
Always feel free to call our Brooklyn Borough office yourself, (718) 852-4900, with any questions you may have. They are open from 3:30pm-6:30pm to answer most of your questions. I encourage it. Certainly, if I got it wrong, let me know so that the next person gets the right information.
I ask for patience as the pieces that have been misplaced, be replaced where they should. I ask that we support each other the best way that we can to ensure high academic achievement for our students. Lastly, let us continue to be professional and respectful to each other. We will accomplish more working together, than against.
At Your Service,
Roderick Palton
