Dear Colleagues,

 

It is only October and it already feels like we have been at work for months! So much has happened in such a little time, and I could only warn you that there may be more to come.

 

As you are aware, our Adelphi Street site (formerly 829) has moved to PS 54K in Bedford Stuyvesant. The change was a tough one for our staff there since many had been part of the Adelphi Street site since it opened some 20 years ago. Generally, a 12:1:1 site until a couple of years ago, the site now has two 12:1:1 alternate assessment classrooms. Originally, there was one and as recent as this year, one more was added, replacing a standard 12:1:1.

 

Last week, another standard class was closed, cutting the number of classes from six down to four. Closing this class, per the district’s directive, meant that two teachers were displaced, but not “excessed”. These teachers will be moved to vacancies within our school.

 

The closing of classrooms by the DOE is strictly a cost saving measure at this time. The decisions that have been made do not consider our needs as people or professionals; and certainly do not put children first.

 

The direction that the district is going is clear. With the growing population of children diagnosed with autism, the district is limiting the number of students with emotional disorders into our programs. General education schools are now being asked to manage these students in house.

 

We love our children in alternate assessment. I truly enjoy seeing and speaking to them. However, it is a sad time for our district and our staff who truly enjoy working with our standard assessment students. Of course these changes will not be immediate, but the phase out has begun.

 

It is something that will be watched closely in regards to the impact this will have on our staff here, and across the city. At the moment, it looks eminent that some of us, who work with standard assessment students, may be working with students in alternate assessment. Our licenses are the same.

 

With that said, always remember who we are here for. But also remember, who is here for you- The UFT!
