and another recepient of the Sid Harris Award on Nov. 2nd, 2008.

Jane Parchinsky has been part of our school until she retired in August 2008. In a way, she continues have a big impact. For over eight of those years, Jane served us in one of the biggest ways, taking up one of the most challenging positions any member can take- Chapter Leader! Someone once told me, “If you find this job easy, then you ain’t doing it right.” Believe me, Sean was right.

 

During those eight years, Jane made it her business to promote the union amongst a staff who truly couldn’t be bothered. She jumped in headfirst into many subcommittees, including the Subcommittee for Special Education. One of her biggest contributions to the union was being part of the tiresome Negotiation Committee, which got us an unprecedented contract.

 

If it were up to Jane, she would still be here with us, serving out her term as Chapter Leader. The passion for the UFT is still present in her voice and her actions. Chapter Leaders across the district and the city remember. Union leaders remember her.

               

On November 2nd, Jane Parchinsky received the coveted Sidney Harris award for Special Educators. Sidney Harris was an African-American special educator who fought for civil rights and equality. His work on behalf of disabled children helped open doors and bring new opportunity where none had existed.

 

Those who were able to attend the event, (I heard about three tables full), said it was a memorable occasion.
