The H1N1 virus (most commonly known as the Swine Flu), has caused a state of hysteria in our schools. DOE employees are nervous since over ten schools have already been closed for an extended period of time, and there have been some fatalities. In addition, several members across the school system have contracted the flu in schools that have not closed.
We must protect ourselves by doing things that we should be doing anyway. Take the same precautions you would to avoid regular seasonal flu and other respiratory infections:
*Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
*Avoid touching your nose, mouth or eyes.
*Try to avoid close contact with sick people or things such as kissing, sharing toothbrushes, cigarettes or drinks.
In the event you do get flu symptoms:
*Stay home until your symptoms resolve, and don’t return to work or school until you have been well for at least 24 hours.
*Avoid going to the hospital if you have mild flu-like symptoms such as fever and cough – even if you think you could have H1N1 flu, but contact your PCP. People with flu usually recover without medical treatment. You should rest, drink plenty of liquids and take the medications you would normally use to treat symptoms.
*Cover your mouth with a tissue when sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose. Clean your hands afterwards, using soap and warm water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Monitor your students for symptoms. Those with flu-like symptoms should be brought to the school nurse. If they do have the symptoms, then they should be separated from all others until picked up. Those students should stay home until the symptoms pass.
We should track all cases where students have flu-symptoms. If you or your students become sick with the flu, please e-mail me at CL231k@aol.com. This is VERY important in maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment for us ALL! Visit UFT.org for more info on H1N1.
