There are currently one hundred seventy thousand children receiving special education services in New York City public schools. According to state and federal laws, all students with special needs must be evaluated and given what is called an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Every public school student who is slated to receive special education services such as speech, counseling, physical or occupational therapy must have an IEP, and each IEP is custom-designed to reflect a student’s unique needs by a team of teachers and other school staff.
The UFT on April 6 launched its “There is No Excuse” campaign in schools across the city to help educators resolve issues relating to special education services, data collection, and spotlighting systemic issues within special education programs citywide. The initiative is designed to give more support and resources to educators, allowing them to easily report problems they are experiencing with providing mandated services to students in their schools.
Teachers, service providers, assessment professionals, paraprofessionals, parents, advocates, elected officials and anyone with information regarding service delivery issues of special education will now be able to call a new hotline or use an up-to-the-minute form to log their complaints.
