After reports that some schools were lowering their indoor temperatures from 68 to 66 degrees, the UFT's Safety and Health Department contacted the DOE's Division of School Facilities (DSF). DSF reported that the Department of Citywide Administrative Services had issued a citywide directive to reduce building temperatures to 66 degrees from 68 degrees, but that schools are exempt because of the more stringent requirement under section 45.11 of the New York City Health Code.
The DSF has directed the Custodial Engineers to try to reduce temperatures in places like hallways or common spaces "where this would not be disruptive or inappropriate." Classrooms and child-occupied spaces must be maintained at 68 degrees and principals have the right to maintain the 68-degree temperature wherever they deem necessary. While we understand the need of the City to save a few bucks. We should not compromise the comfort and health of our students and staff to do this. As a result, Classroom teachers should monitor classroom temps when the temperatures are cold outside.
