CHAPTER LEADER MESSAGE-SEPTEMBER '09

09/17/2009 23:57

Dear Colleagues,

First of all, welcome back to what I hope has been a graceful beginning thus far. Coming off from an excellent Chapter 683 program and a quick, but restful three weeks off, I am excited about this year and I hope you are too.

This year has seen a lot of changes both within our school and our union. First, I would like to welcome our new staff members throughout all four sites. I look forward to meeting with all of you soon; and certainly reach out to me if you need anything in the meantime.

Second, as most of you are aware, we have a new UFT president, Michael Mulgrew; as well as a new District 75 Representative, Walter O’Leary. Both are committed to continuing the work of their predecessors and leading our district and union forward.

I once again recommit   myself to represent our staff and our school to the best of my ability. However, that does not mean that every fight is worth having. I continue to stress collaboration and proactive measures as a way to avoid issues. As the AFT mantra goes- “With us! Not to us!”

Our union is as strong as its members and so is our school. We pay our dues every check. When we need assistance, our union has been, and will continue to be there for us. We should return the favor and be there for the union, as well.

It is my hope that more of you will support union causes. Whether it is showing up for rallies and parades, meetings, or most importantly donating to COPE; we need your help! I need your help! I will be reaching out to you for your support.

I cannot stress the importance of making me aware of your concerns in a timely manner. If there is an issue of concern, feel free to e-mail or call me, as soon as possible. This will ensure timely handling of any grievances that may need to be filed. You can always call the borough office at (718) 852-4900 (after school hours) for assistance on all union matters and questions.

Finally, one of the things that I loved about the summer was the sense of unity that I saw. People were energetic and truly committed to giving our students a different and fun academic experience. It strengthened my love for this school, its staff, and what I do. Congratulations on a job well done!

At Your Service,

Roderick Palton

Without COPE, There's no HOPE

The UFT won a slew of political victories in Albany and City Hall during the last school year, and the union couldn’t have done it without the voluntary financial contributions of members to the union’s ongoing legislative and political work. The wins — which included getting the state and...
